Cantine Nervi is, within the denomination of Gattinara, the oldest reality; founded in 1906 by Guido Ferretti, brother-in-law of Luigi Nervi, the company was then, from 2011 to 2018, owned by the Norwegian family Astrup. In April 2018, the turning point, with the choice of Roberto Conterno – owner of the renowned and prestigious Giacomo Conterno winery – to proceed with the acquisition of the company. A little more than a year has therefore started a new adventure on the international markets for Nervi, testifying to the fact that the whole area of Upper Piedmont is gradually finding itself again, affecting prominent names in the regional wine scene.
The hectares owned, about 24, have been expertly managed since 1984 by the enologist Enrico Fileppo who, in the management of the vineyard and the cellar, adopts traditional methods together with the use of innovative systems; the soils, rich in volcanic porphyry, are particularly suited to the production of nebbiolo and the climate, dry and at the same time cool – the Monte Rosa with its 4000 meters high protects the vineyards from the cold north winds and guarantees a correct regime of rainfall and ventilation – enhances the degree of aromaticity, favoring the production of deep, complex and very mineral wines, which strongly reflect the terroir.
The vineyards are owned by four, namely Molsino, with southern exposure, Valferana, Garavoglie and Casacce.
The first, that is the Molsino, is a real natural amphitheater at the foot of the Alps, one of the most beautiful in all of Piedmont; the Valferana vineyard instead, already mentioned in 1242 in the municipal deeds of the municipality of Gattinara, is known everywhere for its ability to give grapes of great elegance and body.
Considering the ancient and long-lived history of Nervi, which has always focused on excellent wine production, the cellar – in light of the aforementioned acquisition – is still to be considered, within the wine panorama of Upper Piedmont, an irreplaceable reality and protagonist.
